Proverbs 18:2
A fool has no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
This is a very interesting proverb which describes not only the present state of those who despise instruction and its application, but the future estate of such a one as well. It is all spoken in one short phrase, but it is spoken so profoundly true.
As incomprehensive as it may seem, obviously, there are those people who simply have no desire to understand truth, and most probably because they do not understand its personal benefits. Not only do they see no profit from the gain of understanding, but as the writer so aptly put it, they find no delight in it, or as we might say, they find no fun in it. For many the only goal of life is diversion, or selfish prosperity. They meticulously plan life around things that bring vain pleasure, and never stop to consider the most important part of their life; the state of their own heart and soul.
The most important task that we have throughout our entire lives is to somehow and some way find time to discover the condition of our heart. By doing this, we can begin to do whatever it is that we might need to do, in order to live a life full of joy, peace, and blessing. Here is a quote that you may have heard said concerning cancer survivors, “Early detection was what saved this person’s life.” It is the same with our soul. We need to look inside ourselves as early and as often as we can so that we might know our weaknesses, and what areas of our lives need changing.
I am a Louisiana boy, and I don’t think that there is anyone that likes to have a good time as much as I do. However, I know that if I don’t keep my soul in the right condition, very soon there will be no good times to enjoy. If we don’t take time to discover what is on the inside of our soul, so that God can change our heart by his word and through his Spirit, we must know assuredly, that the day will come when it will discover and uncover itself!
